There are approximately 1.6m learner driving test conducted annually; this means there is a constant demand for quality Driving Instructors. Starting a career as a Driving Instructor can be highly rewarding with great job satisfaction and total independence.

You will get to meet people of varying ages, backgrounds, driving abilities and personalities. Everyday will be different and the job is very interesting and challenging. You will be teaching individuals a life skill, which gives you a huge sense of achievement especially after a positive driving test result.

Assuming you are a fit and proper person you with at least 4 years of driving experience, you will have to undergo a significant amount of training as well as pass three qualifying examinations.

Legal Minimum Requirements to become an ADI

Instructor car

  • Hold a British or Northern Ireland driving licence for at least 4 years
  • Not have been disqualified from driving at any time in the four years prior to entry in the Register
  • To be a fit and proper person with a favourable CRB check
  • Read a licence plate from 90 feet and supply two character references.

Instructor carAll convictions, including motoring offences, still in force will be taken into account when your suitability is assessed to be entered in the register, and passed the register qualifying exams, which is in three parts. You must take and pass parts 2 and 3 of the exam within two years of passing the written test.
Failing that, you must wait until the end of the two year period, to restart the qualifying process, starting with re-registration and the theory exam.
